JH Sports: Fredericton’s winter golf haven

JH Sports is Fredericton’s winter haven for a growing golf population, located on the North Side they offer simulator services to keep golfer’s skills up to par.

Since the beginning of the pandemic Canada has seen a year-over-year growth in its golf population according to Lightspeed golf, a business analytic company. Lightspeed surveys over 500 courses and in 2022 alone saw an increase of 7.5%.

Fredericton has five different courses in the area such as Fredericton Golf Club and Kingswood Golf Course. While these local courses stay closed from October to April JH Sports helps foster this new golf population. They offer four Trackman simulator bays that accurately track any shot from a six-foot putt to a 300-yard drive. Trackman simulators offer hundreds of golf courses and activities.

“At JH Sports, we have four simulators. On each simulator you can practice, go on the range, or you can play courses 9 holes or 18 holes,” said Alex Mccrea, JH Sports employee.

Many golfers like Don MacPherson take advantage of the services JH provides. MacPherson is a member through the winter months and has been able to improve his game year-over-year.

“When I came here four years ago, I was a 19 handicap, last year I was a 7, probably going to be less this year. I’m 65-years-old, I’m getting better and older. That’s not common,” said MacPherson.

Mccrea and MacPherson both say that simulators like these are beginner friendly and a good starting point for new golfers. They believe that simulators will help grow the game they both love.

“I definitely think that the simulators get a lot more people interested in golf,” said Mccrea.
