Music as coping mechanism

Music is an important part of people’s development. Either as a child growing up in a musical environment, or as an adult specializing in any type of area to the musical environment and how it could be applied to helping other. Besides that, music is also a tool, and a coping mechanism for university students. As many uses it as a way of dealing either with stress, or other emotional situations. The St. Thomas campus, besides being an arts university, it also houses the access of many people to use and produce music. As this a university commonly known for its great influence on the arts. There’s a common idea that there’s going to be different points of view, and the involvements of music on a daily life. Through the idea of musicians in STU, and from other aspects of the medium of the art. Music is a great gateway for the development of other creative sides of the brain. But sometimes there’s always a counter effect when being enrolled inside an institution like a university, or college. People got to make choices over their future and how they are going to develop forward, but that also causes them to develop new worries and problems.

There’s always a second scenario that affects the emotions of many students, that don’t know what to do with their future or career. They start to stress over the idea of uncertainty, but as many of this same situation, music becomes a part of the solution. Music as a coping mechanism for the stress of students, has been a signature trademark for many as a way of trying to decrease the intensity of their problems.

Through an interview made to Marcel Chamorro said “Music became a great part of my life, as a literature honors attending STU. I deal with the problems of having to decide what to do after everything ends.” The idea of using a certain type of art as a way of reliving themselves or some of the pending questions. But many students don’t only focus themselves on a single style, most of them grant different genres for different emotions. As Chamorro stated “when I feel angry because of my assignments I just plug in my headphones and listen to trash metal. Or when I’m feeling overwhelmed by my job I listen to soft jazz. Especially when I’m feeling sad and without the inspiration of doing anything, I like listening to music from my past to remember good times.”

Remembering old times to feel better or dealing with hard emotions define the concept of music as a concept mechanism. As Milagros Reyes stated “music is a great coping mechanism for students and their emotions. As a fine arts major and a singer, music has been by my side helping me from lowest points and issues that no other could even understand.”

In the many daily scenarios of these students, music has been continuously helping them. Giving support as a coping mechanism, helping to understand emotions that make them feel overwhelmed by the simple thought of them. But that’s not all of it, music in a university environment has become an influential subject for many students that want to try something new. The development of their art has become part of their coping mechanism, showing it publicly through singing at events or open mics. Including how much support the university gives them through cultural events, music can be surely attributed as one of the most vivid coping mechanism for any kind of emotional situation that could affect any student and their environment, as they just want to have a good time and get through school.
