Game Night – St. Thomas University

Fredericton, New Brunswick—St. Thomas University’s International Office hosted a game night for students.

There is about a month left in the year. Students are busier than ever. The international office decided to let them have some fun.

“I am extremely happy to have seen people from different regions and have some of my friends around just to chat after a very stressful week,” said Hyemin Hwang, a internationl student.

Maria Caridad Guerrero, one of the hosts, said, “This event we created this event so we can host the final celebration for students for the international education week this is a major week for all international students where we feel that our accomplishments.” Maria added, “In our efforts to be part of the community are recognized by the overall community. And this was just a present from us to international office to everyone right now it’s a difficult time for students everyone is kind of like funny with a lot of homework and a lot of activities, so we just wanted to give them that time to hang out and to distress a bit from everything.”

This event consisted of two games.

The first game is bingo. Bingo is a fun game of chance that anyone can play. The game is played on a scorecard that’s made up of 25 squares – if you get five squares in a row, you win! Your goal is to cover five of those squares in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal row. When a player gets 5 covered squares in a row on their scorecard, they should yell “Bingo”, so everyone knows they won. Students who match square or U-shaped shapes received snacks. One lucky student achieved a bingo every time.

The second game is Kahoot. Are you interested in guessing facts on how well you know your friends?

Kahoot is a live game show-based learning platform that provides user-generated multiple-choice quizzes. This platform allows a host to set up the questions tailored to topics in advance, and videos, images and diagrams may be added to your questions to amplify the experience.

Players answer on their own devices, while questions are displayed on a shared screen. Speed points are included based on how quickly you can answer a question correctly.

As it was a gathering of international students, they were quizzed on various topics such as history, entertainment, and common sense.

Andrea Escober, a host, said, “We have the chance to have a small bingo and trivia and the trivia was just like to encourage little competition. It’s always fun to compete around and just like have everyone know laugh a little bit or even learn more about like other parts of the world, which is the best, but the best part of today was seeing everyone interact with each other.”

The night also included several giveaways where students won prizes. The international office hopes to do more games in the future and try out a variety of games to appeal to all students.

“We’re exploring as many options as we can to give students to connect with each other and we’ll always allow students to learn if they’ve never played the game before.” Andrea added, “As doing so we are beyond happy and proud to have people around of course and we are open to hearing more events ideas and look forward to next year.”

The international office will be expanding on its programs in the future and hopes to offer more events will come in the new year.
