In the weeks before Halloween, many people were filling the halls at local stores to collect a few items for their last-minute Halloween shopping. In Fredericton, stores were flooded with customers young and old looking to find their perfect costume before the clock runs out. Besides looking at the vast number of costumes and accessories, shoppers also could find a large selection of decor, including fog machines and different types of lights.

Parents, grandparents, guardians, children and students all head out to local stores to try and spot their desired costumes in time for the big event. People head out to stores that are close together and try to find items to fill their costume and decoration needs. Spirit Halloween has face masks, wigs, hats, swords, canes, robes, capes and mostly every accessory you can find. There are a few stores on Prospect Street that can also supply you with Halloween makeup, face paint, press-on nails, fake eyelashes and many other makeup products that can add an extra element to top off a Halloween look.  Many people have said that they cannot believe that it is the end of October already and that Halloween “snuck upon them.”

“Well, probably because they were busy with school or work,” said UNB student Justin Hackett. “I procrastinated it,” Hackett said, “and then I kept forgetting about it and pushing it away.”

Customers, like Hackett, came in packs to the local stores to find what they needed to complete their looks. Students have a busy schedule during the Halloween season. Many students have a lot of midterm projects and tests that are due in the few weeks leading up to Halloween causing them to focus their time on their school work. Although students are focusing on their work, they still have few moments to plan and arrange their Halloween costumes. Students often come together to pick up cohesive costumes when they finally get a chance to go out to the shops and look around.

Many students do not have an abundance of money so some use clothes they already have, or buy more affordable clothing, and go to Halloween stores to find accessories that match their homemade costumes. Instead of heading to stores like Spirit Halloween, some people head to more affordable stores to look at decorations, accessories for their costumes, and to pick up candies that are individually wrapped, which is very important for sanitary reasons, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak. The more affordable stores offer much of the same type of face paint that more expansive stores would sell but in a more affordable price range.
