UNB came into the game with a 5-0 record and were looking to stay perfect while closing out their regular season. The last time these two teams met was September 19th with the Reds coming out on top by a score of 69 to 5. With the prior defeat on their mind, STU came out playing well, containing the Red’s potent offense as much as possible while also finding a way to score. They ended the first half with the game in reach for a potential second-half comeback.

But STU did not come out unscathed as a knee injury knocked out one of their players for the rest of the game affecting their already shallow pool of players. Starting the second half up 27 to 7 the Reds took advantage of a tired Tommies team as they scored drive after drive eventually running up the final score to 88-7.

Coach Kevin Wilson speaks about his team’s big win (Corey Kelly/STU Journalism)

“I think our just size and our skill level combined with our team’s size and speed I think were the biggest factor along with having a deep bench,” said Reds coach Kevin Wilson on the team’s big win. “the girls played really well overall”

UNB has won big all season beating Mount Allison 83-10 in one of their meetings as well as beating the University of King’s College 72-5 in one of their meetings. Even with such big wins the team still believes they have room to improve going into the finals.

“I think just like focusing on communication on the overlap of the offense I think that’s something that we need to practice,” said rookie Zoe Milliea.

“We have a big thing that we stress right from day one is communication,” said Coach Wilson

Both players and coaches believe that communication is a major key to success as well as something they can work on, and with the regular season wrapped up, they will have time to do so.

With the Reds finishing 6-0, the best record in the league, they get a bye straight to the finals so they will have 2 weeks off before their next game. They will continue to practice multiple times a week to attempt to improve their communication while also building up the other aspects of their game so that they are ready to play for the championship.

The Reds will face off against the University of King’s College for the third and final time in the finals on November 6th at College field to determine the winner of the women’s rugby championship for the 2021 season.
