TikTok DIY Projects are Influencing People to engage in more Arts and Crafts

Have you been running out of ideas for how to use your free time during COVID-19? Well, you shouldn’t feel left out because everyone else is too, apparently. Typically, this would be the time year where we are approaching annual events, celebrations, family gatherings, etc. However, COVID-19 has put a damper on all of this.

This disruption in our day-to-day lives is motivating people to find other ways of having fun. One trend we have seen a steady increase in is at-home projects (Aka ‘DIYS’).

A do-it-yourself (DIY) project can range from a friendship bracelet to a new vanity you constructed and designed yourself. Nevertheless, this trend is leaving big retail corporations such as Costco, and home sense with the upper hand during a crisis.

Costco’s sales rose 17.6% from $15 billion to $18 billion and their online sales increased by 57.7% in March alone (As Reported by, Marianne Wilson).

A lot this spending is what we call ‘retail therapy’, people are looking for a way to keep themselves busy, and happy during these hard times and who can blame them? Projects and crafts are a safe and easy way to lift your moods compared to other coping mechanisms.

Most of the inspiration for these projects comes from social media platforms like TikTok. One of the most trending hashtags is “TikTok Made Me Buy It”, which consist of people sharing shopping finds on sites like Amazon and Costco.

YouTube is another prime example of how these trends and ideas travel from one part of the world to another.

Many of these artists will re-create high-end designs such as Louis Vuitton bags, giving young girls the chance to make themselves hand-made luxury items. Designer Kellie Ford made a TikTok where she made a Louis Vuitton shopping bag into a handbag for only 45$ (As Reported by, Nikita Charuza).

Considering a standard Louis Vuitton bag retails at least 1000$, this sent people on a mission to gather the materials they need to do it themselves.

Overall, DIY trends have been extremely beneficial for the economy, and for people who have been struggling during the pandemic.

Considering everybody is trapped in their own bubble and have been spending time alone, having social media platforms like TikTok is a great way to keep people feeling connected and motivated to engage in activities. If you’ve been feeling in a slump lately, taking on a new hobby might be exactly what you need to life your spirits back up!
