Runners Didn’t Mind A 4K In The Chilly Weather

FREDERICTON – Over 150 runners came out this past Saturday morning to participate in the Frozen Nose and Toes 4K Fun Run. The chilly run was part of Fredericton’s FROSTival.

It included a kids marathon, adult four-kilometre run and two-kilometre snowshoe run was held at the Victoria Health Centre, in downtown Fredericton. The run followed down the city’s riverfront trail.

It was open to all ages and had a $15 registration fee. The first 150 people that registered received a branded winter Buff.

“It’s something to just get people active during the winter… Just getting out there, breathing and having physical activity, that’s the whole goal of this,” said Bruce Macfarlane, co-director of the committee.

The kid’s marathon started at 10 A.M. Children showed up with their parents shortly before 10 o’clock and chose their favorite superhero cape to wear as they completed the race. Once the children passed the finish line, they each received a medal for participation.

Adults started showing up 30-minutes early so they could stretch, warm-up and check-out the trail that they would be running.

A large countdown clock was placed in front of the arch so runners knew exactly how much time till they were ready-to-go!

“This is also a primer to get us ready for the month of May when we have our big annual Fredericton Marathon. This year we’re going to be celebrating 42 years in the second weekend in May and we got the bridge back! The Westmorland Street Bridge,” said Macfarlane.

At the sound of Macfarlane’s whistle, the adults were off running. It was a slow start to the run due to all the ice on the ground.

After the race, they had the option of attending a reception with hot chocolate to warm up at the Delta Marriott Fredericton.

The run first started as a four-mile run in 1982 by Paul Lavoie, who is still a member of the committee today. The run originated in New Maryland.

The Capital City Road Runners then took it over for a few years, then the Fredericton Marathon committee brought the run back in 2019 as a four-kilometre run and a two-kilometre snowshoe run.

Whether you’re looking to stay active in the winter months or try something new, the Fredericton Marathon Committee has runs throughout the year.
