Local Florist Blooms Through the Winter Blues

FREDERICTON – Have you been yearning for the scent, and beauty of fresh flowers during this cold winter? Well, look no further. Riannon McVay, owner of Hanson Road Flower Co., can satisfy your needs. Whether it’s wedding flowers, event centerpieces, or everyday floral arrangments for your home; this company specializes in it all.

McVay’s passion for flowers sparked at a young age.

“When I was a little girl, every summer my beautiful and energetic mom would pop my sister and I into our pink homemade wagon and pull us down the road to pick wildflowers for our kitchen table. This special road that we grew up on and where my parents still live, is called Hanson Road, and it is where my flower story begins,” said McVay.

In 2017, McVay studied floral design in Melbourne, Australia for one year. This city is known for its flower-loving culture, through shops, flower farms, and flower design schools.

“The Australian native flowers drew me to Australia. I chose to study there because of their wild botanical design style. I knew my journey in Australia was coming to an end, but my journey towards opening my flower shop was just beginning,” said McVay.

At the end of October, McVay returned to Fredericton and began to make her dream a reality. This business is primarily an online floral studio, as well as having a pop-up shop each weekend at the Northside Market.

McVay’s social media platforms are used to place orders, organize a consultation, or to check out upcoming workshops.

“A lot of people love flowers other than me, and hosting workshops at different local businesses downtown is a way to create community, and get other people having their hands in the flowers,” said McVay.

Each week, flowers are delivered to her home studio, which are then placed in a mixture of eco-friendly solution and water. To McVay, being an environmentally friendly florist is key. The arrangements are placed in recycled bottles, mason jars, or vases.

This florist has many plans in store, including an upcoming workshop at MoCo Downtown, where individuals will design a Christmas centerpiece.
