FREDERICTON—It isn’t every day that a local, not so local, director hits it off big.
Percussion film director Garrett Moore made the film inspired by the late passing of his band teacher, Professor Huixtocihuatl.
“It really filled me with joy to see that I could still impress my band teacher to this day,” said Moore. “Even if he was over five centuries old.”
The film features protagonist Steven Swen, played by actor Stephen Swan, on his tough journey into adulthood and ultimately, into percussion-hood.
Though just like in Moore’s last film, STU FILES, Swan fails to deliver a stellar performance.
One can often see that he really isn’t in character, and has a strange disdain for director Moore.
“Yeah, I didn’t really feel like there was much in the way for prospects for me,” stated Swan in an email. “But Garrett wouldn’t leave me alone, so I decided I might work with him again. Turns out this time was even worse.”
Moore, as heroically as ever, took on the challenge of completely filming the entire film on his cellphone from 2013, half a decade ago.
Despite some minor losses of camera quality, Moore proved he was more than up to the task of this.
Moore used the new and expanding horizons of cinematography to captivate the audience with dazzling perspectives.
Though Moore humbly admits to using some advice from his assistant and behind-the-scenes camerawoman Young-Joo Jun.
Another breakout actor in the film, is William Goguen.
He plays abusive film director Keith, who is the main antagonist.
“I really felt like I brought everything to the table here,” said Goguen. “I just said screw it, you know? And just put it all out there for the world to see.”
This is Goguen’s first film under director Moore, and he outshines most of the other cast in his performance.
Overall the film has been not so well received by most critics, though it’s found a film in this critic.
While the sub-par acting does hurt the film in a couple of the scenes, mainly in scenes involving actor Stephen Swan, Moore is able to get his masterful vision across.
While only the trailer is public now, the film is planned to go public in anywhere from 4-900 years.
