Winter is Here

The weather has taken a dramatic shift since the summer heat wave as Fredericton was given over 20 centimetres of snow.

New Brunswicker’s may not be upset at the snow fall. Snow is expected. Some people take issue with the fact that it’s still November.

Despite the blistering wind and snow, both University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University campuses remained open.

From the high heat, to the low colds, students at St. Thomas University are scrambling to adjust to the sudden weather change as exam season is getting ever closer.

Hillary Latham is a third-year student from Saint John, and she is already done with snow.

“It’s kind of annoying and super frustrating that we’re getting this much snow already in November, but apparently we’re supposed to have like a really really harsh winter with a lot of this. So, I’m not really looking forward to it,” she said.

The city of Fredericton had to be quick clearing the roads and sidewalks so citizens only need to worry about the cold.  Latham is hopeful that the city’s plows will clean up the roads so people only need to worry about the cold.

“I don’t know honestly. I have faith that the city will clean up the roads, but then again I know it’s hard to keep on top of the snow and making sure it’s all clean but, I have faith in Fredericton.”

As Canadians are accustomed to the frozen tundra they call home, some international students who live in tropical climate and moving up north can be a learning curve.

Alexa Navas has lived in Canada for over a year and has never seen snow before attending St. Thomas.

In her second year, her experience with the first snow falls of 2018 have been different than 2017.

“I remember last year, the first time, like the first snowfall, it was very fun. We just went out there and we played for like a couple hours, we built snowman, and took lots and lots of cute pictures, but then we were freezing and then this year, we actually hadn’t gone out to have fun in the snow but we were planning to build a snowman tonight actually.”

With exam season approaching, students try to lower their stress with some Tim’s, a nice blanket and a new Netflix series to binge.
