PepsiCo unveils plans for new product: Lady Doritos

Have you ever crunched a chip too loudly? Doritos is working on a solution to this problem.

PepsiCo CEO, Indra Nooyi, stated during an interview with Freakonomics Radio that the Doritos company was working on releasing a chip designed for women. These new chips, dubbed “Lady Doritos,” are designed to fit into a purse, have a quieter crunch and less cheese powder to stick to your fingers. She said women don’t like crunching too loudly or tipping the bag to their mouths to eat the crumbs.

However, PepsiCo received backlash on social media from many women who said they were comfortable eating regular Doritos.

St. Thomas student, Natalie Bowie, says men and women eat chips the same way:

“For me personally, I eat my chips the same way everyone else eats their chips, one chip at a time.”

PepsiCo has since retracted their statement about the new product. They posted a tweet stating:

“We already have Doritos for women – they’re called Doritos and they’re loved by millions.”

Still, a conversation has opened about how women want equality, better healthcare, and representation; not their own chip.

St. Thomas student, Colton Harvey, agrees:

“I think they want equal rights, equal pay… we need to be equal.”

According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, women who work full-time earn 74 cents for every dollar earned by men. This pay disparity is even greater for low-income women and women of color. Many statistics like this were tweeted to the company upon the news of the gendered snack, causing an outcry on social media.

The Lady Doritos controversy has shown that women want a louder voice, not a quieter crunch.
