Miramichi/Blackville, New Brunswick– BHS girls come out on top in their provincial finals.

BHS Sr. Girls celebrating their historical win.

On the weekend of November 6th and 7th, the Blackville High School Senior Girls soccer team headed to their provincial finals at the King Street Turf Feild in Miramichi, New Brunswick. The Blackville Sr. Grils soccer team made history that weekend and it is a weekend that the team will not soon forget. This is where the girls won the first female soccer provincial title at Blackville school. The Blackville High School girls have only won two banners in the school’s history, this being the first soccer title.

At the provincial tournament in Miramichi, the top four men’s and women’s teams in Division IV met to compete for the provincial title.  At this stage, each team had come out on top within their leagues and are now hoping to clinch the title and bring the banner home. Each team had been given a placement seed  in a tournament healed within their half of the province, North vurses East and South vurses West, and the top two teams were sent to the provincial finals, this tournament is called “regionals”. At the provincial tournament on Saturday team 1 on the NorthEast played team 2 on the SouthWest then team 1 one the SouthWest played team 2 on the NorthEast the winner of these games played off for the banner on Sunday, the loser, unfortunately, gets sent home.

The BHS Sr Girls soccer team finished first on the NorthEastern side of the province with an undefeated season. This year it was the North’s turn to host provencials so, BHS team was the hosting team. They faced off against Fredericton Christain Acamady on Sturday November 6th. The girls started off stong scoring early in the first half building thier confidence. The girls played hard to keep their lead for the rest of the half. In the second half the BHS  score their second goal of the tournament mid way through the second half of the game now leading 2-0.  The team played hard to keep the Frederiction Christain Acadamy Eagles from scoring and they were successful by shutting the other team out and  keeping the final score 2-0 advancing them into the title game.

Before the game on Saturday BHS Senior Emma Hallihan was interviewed. She expressed many emotions about going into the “do-or-die” game.

“I’m very anxious especially because this is our last shot, especially because I’m a senior and I wanna be apart of the team that makes it.”

Emma’s nerves were similar to others on the team as they passed by you could hear the girls mention how important this game was to them and that they wanted to win so they could play in the finals game. Although, watching their first game you could not tell how nervous the girls were. There was a lot riding on the girls’ shoulders because many teams in the past were so close to making it, they felt like this was their shot. High school senior Jorja Donovan stated she is “glad that we are the ones that hasn’t gotten robbed yet.”

The BHS girls team went onto their finals game and won 3-1. The girls were scored on early in the first half but kept their heads up and went on to our score the other team and bring the banner home. It was a nail biting game but the girls kept in it. This was history for Blackville school. It was the first BHS Sr. Girls soccer banner that had been a long time coming, said many of the schools alumni. After their win the girls paraded their banner through the Main Street in Blackville excoursted by the Blackville RCMP and Fire Department.
