Student Appreciation Night
Thursdays nights once belongs to The Social Club on the University of New Brunswick. Located upstairs in the Student Union Building, they held weekly Ladies Nights. Women could enter without paying cover and the drinks were arguably the cheapest in Fredericton. It was the perfect bar for students as it felt safe staying on campus with campus police and was walkable for most students living off-campus. Due to the pandemic, it was forced to close its doors in March of 2020. Today, it remains closed. Without having posted on social media about a possible reopening, it has left student wondering where they’ll go on Thursday nights.
It was not until an investigation occurred that the bar was discovered to be under construction. Word of mouth and media outlets spread news of renovation of the beloved bar therefor breaking the hearts of many students.
“I’m really sad that I won’t be able to go to S-Club for my last year here at STU. I haven’t been here since my second year and it was the best and safest place for student on campus to party. It’s really upsetting that we won’t have that option anymore” said Emily Russell.
A bar located on UNB campus had many advantages. Campus police being at the Student Union Building, around residence and walking the trails made students feel safe, unlike downtown. Also, the bar would be almost always all student or people of that age group which created the favorable place to meet people outside of residence or classes.
The empty go-to location for Thursday nights was quickly picked up by Klub Khrome at the Tannery downtown. Khrome is known for having many different themed events including the popular “Fiesta Latina” where Latin music would be played and Corona beer and Tequila shots would be at a discounted price. This school year they introduced “Student Appreciation Nights” for every Thursday, September to May. On these nights, students can enter the bar free of cover if they show a student ID.
“We sometimes have Student Appreciation Nights and we’re always busy here and we’re always looking for more people to attend”, said senior Klub Khrome bouncer Trystan Knockwood.
While the downside to going-out downtown are the expensive cab rides or walking up the hill, feels less safe and not as much of a student hub. There are the advantages of the many different late-night restaurants. Varying from Jack’s Pizza to Smokes Poutinerie, the restaurants stay open until 3 in the morning for bar goers to grab a bite before heading home.
Although it is yet to be determined if Klub Khrome will become popular for their “Student Appreciation Night” especially now that the fourth wave of the pandemic has set in. It is a great option for students to attend.
