Hello! My name is Koan Walker-Titus, and I’m a second-year student at Saint-Thomas University from Fredericton, New Brunswick. I plan on doing a double major in journalism and history as these are my current fields of interest. My focus on journalism stems from an avid consumption of sport-related podcasts throughout high school, opening my eyes to the possibility of a career dealing in sports broadcasting. I particularly like Ariel Helwani’s podcast, “The MMA Hour”, as I think he is able to easily articulate his opinions on the sport as well as report the news in a humorous, but professional manner. My favourite sports to watch, and subsequently to write about, are basketball, Olympic wrestling (Greco and Freestyle), MMA, volleyball, and football.

In my first year at STU, I wrote for the Aquinian’s sports section, which further solidified my decision to pursue journalism as a major. Due to a lack of games played throughout the academic year, I was forced to write somewhat unconventional stories that focused more on the abstract of sports and less so on individual matches and players. I believe this informal introduction to sports writing allowed me to develop my own unique style, as well as it enhanced my confidence as a writer since it fell, largely, on me to go out and find story topics (all of which you can access on the Aquinian’s online page).
