Late arrival of snow

The first official snowfall in Fredericton, NB was last Wednesday, November 25th. It started snowing around 11am and it didn’t stop until late at night. In a matter of minutes, streets, paths, and trees were painted white.

Many people consider that, despite the low temperatures, winter is the best time of the year, especially when it snows. Brent Narvie, a local baker, considers that winter is his favorite season since he can wear comfy clothes and enjoy the snow, which results calming because everything is quiet and slow.

“Sometimes, I go up to them and push the snow off. I push the branch and watch the snow fall down. It is really satisfying,” said Narvie.

According to Narvie, when the city is covered in white, it looks even more charming. It is like it came out of a fairy tale as it looks magical and beautiful.

Having lots of snow also means lots of activities to do. While some people go out to play in the snow, others decide to do charming photoshoots, and some prefer to stay at home, watching a movie or reading a book, in the company of a hot drink.

Narvie has a great list of favorite activities to do in the snow. This includes going out for a long walk around the city while it snows, taking several photoshoots of his loved ones or of nature in general, being the white trees his favorite target, and when arriving home, putting on a movie to spend the afternoon.

“When I was younger, I used to watch Elf a lot,” said Narvie. “No particular reason why. It’s just always a really funny show and also a good movie.”

On the other hand, others were happy for the late arrival of snow. Some consider low temperatures are preferable to having the streets cloaked in white because snow makes their life more difficult than usual.

St. Thomas University International Admissions Counsellor Camila Vasquez considers that the principal reason snow makes her life harder is that it becomes a challenge to drive. She has to do a lot of driving because of her work, but it is complicated for her to drive as usual on slippery roads. In addition, she has to slow down in order to avoid any accidents, so she must leave ahead of time her house. If there is a heavy snowstorm, she has to cancel her meetings and her schedule is ruin.

“You have more clothes to put on, you have to think about your footwear, you have to think about the road,” said Vasquez, “there are just a lot of things to think about and sometimes that gives me more stress than the job itself.”

Some day-to-day activities are easier without several inches of snow. However, some people do not have the time to take advantage of this since their minds are thinking about more relevant and concerning things. For example, the reason why the snow took longer to arrive this year and wonder if it’s related to global warming.

Elementary supply teacher Shelby Macgregor is concerned about the high temperatures we had in summer, and the late arrival of snow.

“I know there are fluctuations in weather and temperature each year, but I’m worried about global warming and that winters are going to come later or be harder,” said Macgregor. “We are warming too much in Canada and then our whole weather system is going to change.”

According to Macgregor, we must begin to change our actions against the environment, but companies must be the first to show a change, since an individual does not affect as much as large companies. Only if we all come together to seek change, we can save the environment and change our destiny.
