UNB clubs seek volunteers for winter season

FREDERICTON – Representatives from the University of New Brunswick’s variety of clubs and societies set up in the student union building atrium to recruit volunteers for the second half of the school year.

“We’re here at the Winter Clubs and Societies Fair so all students, staff, and faculty know that we are available for them if they ever need support or advocacy,” said Grace Taylor, representing the 203 Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity as well as Qmunity UNB.

Students were able to walk around to the different groups, listen to their platforms and also sign up to volunteer.

Some students came to the fair to collect some of the swag being given away. Taylor’s table had pamphlets, stickers, and condoms to give away. While groups like the UNB Chemistry Society gave away stickers, the UNB Mental Health Association sold their stickers for charity.

Enactus UNB is an international entrepreneurial group designed to take problems in our society and turn them into business ideas.

“We have a project called Connecto and what we do is we teach kids everything about financial literacy through workshops,” said Isis Lucchesi, a third-year STU student from Brazil.

The UNB Student Union provided free pizza despite it not lasting long, and some clubs brought their own foods like donuts, Tim Horton’s timbits, and candy to entice students into checking out their booths.

Around 30 clubs and societies attended.

Some of the groups included the 97.9 CHSR FM Radio, the UNB Anthro Society, the Campus Ministry, and UNBSU Food.

UNBSU Food is a chapter of the student union focusing on food security. Pierrette Janes said the main reason they attended the event was to promote their food bags.

“We usually talk about our food bags with students because a lot of people don’t know that’s a part of what we’re doing here and we help them [students] order them online,” Janes said.

The food bags are available once a month, cost $15 and include $40 worth of food. Janes also said that besides the food bags, they have a garden in the summer and are currently working on starting a food bank on campus.

For clubs like UNBSU Food, having a mid-year clubs and societies fair can be ideal to help tell students what they’ve been missing out on in the previous semester and how they can take full advantage of all the groups on campus.
