A musical evening at the Off-Campus lounge

For many university students, an off-campus lifestyle is the ideal. Some simply enjoy staying in their own home whereas others prefer the freedom that it provides. Consequently, these students don’t often get to form the same connections the same way that students living together in residence do.

This is what helped spur the creation of the Off-Campus Coffee house; a social event held in Sir James Dunn Hall’s off-campus lounge. Being open to all off-campus students, the event offered coffee, treats and musical entertainment.

The acts largely consisted of St. Thomas students as well as students from UNB, preforming a variety of music and other acts.

Students enjoyed much of the music from the comfort of the off-campus lounge.

“Through having both performers from UNB and St. Thomas we’re trying to attract UNB friends in addition to performers,” said Megan Cormier, the off-campus representative for St. Thomas’s Student Union. “Because we understand that off-campus does not only mean St. Thomas off-campus. We want to incorporate every aspect of the campus itself.”

In addition to music, the event offered a wide selection of snacks and hot drinks. There was everything from coffee to hot tea to even deserts and chocolates.

There were almost a dozen performances in total ranging from duets, soloists, and even interpretative dance.

One performance was by a budding band known as “The Bit” who performed classics as “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Blue Christmas”.

“The Bit”, featuring Cameron Patterson on vocals, Rob McPhee on the bongo, Doug Brenton on rhythm guitar, and Colton Scott on lead guitar.

Although the group performed covers during the evening, Cameron Patterson, the group’s lead singer mentioned that the band “have a lot of originals that we are working on and are in the process of being released soon hopefully.”

Ultimately, the performances of “The Bit” and others had many at the social applauding and cheering in awe. The success of the coffee house has left many students, including Megan herself, anticipating another coffee house next semester.
