St. Thomas Women’s Hockey beats UNB Reds on the last minute
This wednesday , at the Grant Harvey Center, women’s hockey fans witnessed a 2-1 comeback by the Tommies.
“We have been looking forward for this rivarly game and trained really hard during the week” said Aislynn Byers, a first year player for the Tommies.
There were high expectations not only from the players, but from the fans, because the season has been sweet and sour so far.
“This season for the Tommies has been a kind of back and forth for them. Running at 500 right now with 8wins-8losses”said Josh Fleck.
“Any time they take a step forward they have an inmmediate step back, so it would be nice to see them make a playoff push toward the second half of the season. A game against UNB is exactly what they need to make that happen” added Fleck.
The game started with UNB having total control and with the Tommies defending well. However, by the start of the second period they recieved their first goal and a few minutes later they recieved a second goal against.
The St. Thomas fans were running out of patience and could not believe that the girls were going to give away the result so easily. Neverthless, the last period started and the Tommies were having the initiative right away. On the last 2 minutes they managed to score two goals and make the comeback. As soon as they scored that last goal, the fans in the stadium went euphoric. It was all smiles at the end of the game.
Looking forward on what comes next for the Tommies, they still have 12 games left on the regular round. When asked about the possibility of reaching the playoffs, Aislynn Byers replied “I think we will be at out best, because we are such a big group of rookies. We are getting better with every game. “Its hard to get though our lines and we build chemistry, so I think we will be very good in playoffs” she added.
