A Dogs Halloween

On October 27th Elder Dog Canada hosted a Halloween event for owners and their dogs to celebrate in the spirit of the season.

All ElderDog asked for was a small donation in order for owners and their dogs to participate. Approximately 20 dogs and owners showcased their best Halloween costumes.

ElderDog Canada Inc. is a charity for ageing people, ageing dogs, and the connection between dog and owner. They assist and support older adults in the care and well-being of their dogs.

They also promote the welfare of older dogs whose lives have been uprooted due to illness, relocation or death of their owner.

“Our main over all goal is to keep seniors and their dogs together for as long as possible,” Fredericton ElderDog Pod Leader Riley Loughead said.

Loughead said that in Fredericton there are over 50 volunteers. “So we have an in home support program where our volunteers go into the home with the seniors and help them with basic dog care, ” she said.

This is the second year that ElderDog has hosted the event, (Hillary Latham/ STU Journalism).

When volunteers enter into the homes, the main segment is dog walking. Loughead said that each volunteer walks 12 different dogs.

Depending on the dog’s and owner’s needs, volunteers will come in as many days as needed and help with other dog related tasks besides talking them for walks.

This is the second year they have hosted the event. This years turnout was much higher than last year. Along with  ElderDog, Global Pet Foods set up a tent for participants.

Dogs won prizes for first, second, and third place for the best costume. Everyone who participated received a toy or treat donated by Global Pet Foods.

“So it’s a really good cause and it’s really fun,” Global Pet Foods Manager Lindsey Davidson said. “All the dogs are coming out and dressed up so that’s great.”

Owners brought their dogs out to dress up in advance of Halloween, (Hillary Latham/ STU Journalism).
