STU Food Bank scores big Trick or Treating
Halloween night was filled with plenty of tricks and treats for both kids and adults. However, for St. Thomas University students it was a night spent gathering food for those in need.
St. Thomas’s annual Trick or Eat event took the form of a competition this year. Students organized into teams and went door to door gathering non-perishable food items for the STU Food Bank.
The team that gathered the most food would receive a $100 gift card to the seller. Nearly a dozen teams entered the competition with some consisting of only two people and for others as much as eight.
“I feel like we had maybe 20 to 25 this year,” said Sarah Cohut, Vice President of Student Life and the lead organizer of the event. “I’m really impressed with the amount of people it brought in this year.”
In previous years, St. Thomas partnered with the charity Meal Exchange to organize Trick or Eat. The food gathered would not only go to the STU Food Bank, but to other food banks and shelters in the Fredericton area.
This year was the first time that Meal Exchange did not contribute to the event. St. Thomas ran Trick or Eat on its own with all of the gathered food going solely to the STU Food Bank.
The teams gathered approximately 506 food items with the winning team managing to collect 156.
“It really brought me back to my childhood remembering what its like to go trick or treating as a kid,” said Megan Clark, member of the winning Trick or Eat team. “This time as an adult and this time for a really good cause.”
For the Campus Ministry who run the Food Bank, they welcome this newfound stock. They hope that this supply of food will sustain many students into next semester.
