New House Rules On Harrington Hall

St. Thomas University students are deeply concerned about the new sanctions on recreation inside Harrington Hall Residence.

The students living in the famous residence can no longer drink or party in the public spaces, that means no more fun in the lounges or hallways. It was a measure taken at the beginning of the school year by the residence board after they evaluated the events of the 2018/2019 school-year.

The ones in charge inside the residence are the students, however between those students there are authorities called the Residence Advisors, also known as RAs.

Harrington Hall president Bryce Miller and Matt Macbeth a first year student respectively, were interviewed last week.

Bryce Miller had been Harrington Hall’s President for two       years.

” I feel that last year, although there was a policy that allowed staying in the lounges, it promoted safe drinking” said Miller. He also stated that it was a space where everybody could share together in community, however that now the drinking is clandestine and that can be dangerous.

On the other hand, Matt MacBeth was more open when he delivered his response and shared a personal experience.

He was clear on mentioning that there is an stigma and prejudice towards “peer pressure” while drinking in parties with your friends. ” I think it is completely the opposite, as someone who used to go to parties and stayed sober, it was very easy to my friends to accept that I was not drinking” he said.  ” They’d still had a good time with me” he added.

” The problem of drinking alone in your room is that if you pass out no one will be able to save you”

If by any means, the RAs caught a student with loud speakers or drinking in the hallways, the students would be surely facing a fine. This measures clearly send the message, not only of drinking responsibly, but for students to focus on their school subjects and improve their grade performances.
