End of Year Inspiration – The Long Night Against Procrastination

It’s that time of year when university students start to feel the end of semester stress. Deadlines are fast approaching and burnout is on the rise, but there is something that gives students hope: The Long Night Against Procrastination (or LNAP for short).

LNAP is a one-day STU event that has helped students with their productivity and stress for the past four years. The focus is primarily on creating a workspace where students can study and get assignments completed while having the motivation of seeing other students doing their own work, but that’s not all it is.

The evening is filled with events that help de-stress students such as therapy dogs, henna tattoos, bingo (LNAPO), a photo booth, crafts, and board and tabletop games. Students also have access to a variety of academic resources such as the writing centre, school-related workshops, and free printing.

Many students have shown up because having an event dedicated to doing school work along with a work-centred atmosphere creates motivation. Upper year student Silas showed up because it’s a great chance to make a final push before the end of the semester. Silas gave his reason for why LNAP helps him focus.

“The fact that everyone else is kind of here working and studying. I mean you wouldn’t be able to tell it from the noise right now, but it kind of does inspire the focus and kind of just sitting there and getting it done. It’s good to provide the opportunity to not only do what you have to do for school but also you get free food and [get to] pet dogs”.

Silas is one of the many students who is trying to get the most out of LNAP by using it as a motivator.

Free food is another staple of LNAP that helps save students time and money. Snack bags are given at the start of the evening along with free fruits and beverages. Later on in the evening pizza is provided and poutine shows up at the end of the night. While it may not be the main reason most students show up, there is no denying the pizza is popular.

Fourth-year student Lucas says that the socialization aspect of LNAP can be just as important for students as getting work done.

“It’s good for people to have even just one really positive night, one really positive experience of socialization. Especially nearing the end of the term, especially nearing the end of the year because a lot of people are feeling really underwater. Even just a brief moment of respite from that, even if you don’t get a whole lot of work done, is going to not only increase your productivity, but it’s also just going to make you a happier person which is much more important than handing your stuff in on time”.

Lucas says that some of the best conversations he has had with his friends have been at LNAP. These moments can be just as valuable as getting work done.

If you missed the event this year then you can catch it again next March. The Long Night Against Procrastination has become a tradition that STUdents can take pride in, and as long as there are students struggling to fight procrastination, the need for LNAP will not go away.
