Enactus: joining the change

Enactus UNB hosted a networking event to celebrate recent victories and introduce themselves to the community.

After winning two awards in the Enactus Regionals Competition and qualifying for Nationals Competitions, the Enactus UNB team decided to celebrate and showcase their projects and the impact they are doing.

It was the first time the team hosted a networking occasion. The event happened last Thursday (04/04) on Planet Hatch, at Knowledge Park, and it counted with the presence of diverse members of the community.

The Enactus UNB team is three-years-old and has already accomplished a lot of their goals. According to the current president, Oriana Cordido, the team is proud of everything they’ve done so far.

In the last competition we attended we were competing against teams that are more than 18-years-old, so it feels good to see how much we’ve done in such a short time,” says Cordido.

Enactus is an international non-profit organization that tries to solve community problems trough business ideas. The association is divided in university teams across the world, and hosts competitions every year.

The Enactus UNB was founded in 2016, and it has created more than six projects. Addressing different problems, the projects try to solve environmental, social and economic issues. Some projects, for example, are CompostU and Entrepreneurship Week – the first seeks to implement a composting system in Fredericton, while the other is a summer program that teaches children about entrepreneurship and helps them create their own business.

In their last Regionals Competitions, the team took two awards home: one for empowering youth and other for supporting entrepreneurship.

The awards were displayed, and the team showcased the presentations they did during competitions. People had the chance to ask about what Enactus does, and how it impacts the community.

Attendees also had the chance to enjoy food, such as quiches, crackers and dips, and drink wine and beer. They had the opportunity to network, meet new people, and give insights on how they believe Fredericton can improve through businesses.

The Enactus team used the evening as an opportunity to meet new sponsors and partners and recruit new members.

Graduating members of the team also shared with the community the new executive board for Enactus UNB and presented members with awards for their outstanding roles and performance.

Isis Lucchesi, one of the new members of the executive board, says it was an emotional night.

It’s hard to see members leaving, but it’s also exciting to get to know the new people that are joining the team, and what fresh ideas they have for us to implement on Enactus and in Fredericton in general.”

According to Lucchesi, the team wants to host more similar events so people become familiar with Enactus.

It’s important to show ourselves to the community, and to make sure people know what we are doing. We need support from residents if we truly want to improve Fredericton.”
