Fighting Procrastination
Procrastination is as common as a cold, and its as stubborn to get rid of. St. Thomas University thinks they have just the right thing to help students
Long Night Against Procrastination is an annual event where one night, before the end of the year, students sign up and gather in George Martian Hall on campus to study and catch up on work
The gathering runs from 5pm to 11pm ending in celebratory poutine from Smokes Poutine.
“The point of this event is, its mid-march, everyone’s tired. We’ve gotten through first semester and we’re getting through second semester. We’re tired from essays, and midterms, and tests, and all the wonderful academic tasks that university throws at us. [So] the point of the event is to make studying work fine,” said academic advisor Kathleen Hyndman.
Hyndman hopes this night brings people more motivation to finish their projects.
Besides breakout group discussions about studying techniques, and quiet spaces for students to study, there were more activities planned to give students breaks and stress relieving stations throughout the night.
A photo booth, board game station, de-stress craft station, therapy dogs and henna were just some of the destressing stations offered to students.
For students who wanted to take advantage of some of the academic help provided they could go to pop up stations for The writing centre, free printing, and academic advising.
Around 470 students registered. All of them taking in the benefits of free food throughout the night, like pizza, and the extra help offered to them.
First year students think this kind of event is a great idea and enjoy what it offers to them.
First year student Jenna Whelan is one of the students who agrees, “I think it’s a great stress reliever for students especially being in your first year and being overwhelmed with exams,” and also “it gives you the motivation to finish your semester an get all your work done.”
Students took advantage of the night, the many stations, and the time to get together with friends and study. Nights like these done well in the past and many hope they continue in the future.
