Midterm Madness on Fredericton Campuses

That time of year has come around again. Mid-terms are in full force and deadlines are creeping closer. For university students, the month of February is known to be a very busy time academically. Most students say they have from two up to seven midterms to complete. This is including papers, assignments and group projects. The work load can become overwhelming and very stressful. Recently online and through the country, there has been advocacy for students to participate in self-care acts. This is in hopes of improving the students well beings during the harsh winter months and midterm seasons.

Checking in with students from both St. Thomas University and UNB campuses, a lot of students had similar self-care ideals and what they thought self-care is and what they believe works best for them during stressful times. Alex Booy shared her thoughts on self care.

“Self-care to me would be taking time specifically out of your day, to do something that’s heathier, positive, towards your mental health, physical health, or emotional health. Something that’s influencing you in a positive way.”

St. Thomas University and UNB have started programs that help students cope with stress and how to deal with time management. These workshops help students make time for themselves and to re-energize.

Students are being pushed to their limits, resulting in lack of sleep and lack of care. Inevitably, the stress that comes along with students and overworking oneself, affects their mental health. Lauren Saunders, a second year UNB students shared her self-care routine.

“So, I personally try to incorporate self-care like every day, not just occasionally, but I find during midterm season and when I’m really stressed out, that’s when I notice more, that’s I’m like, “hey, I need to do something for myself.” Like, I deserve a little break. The weekends, sometimes I stay in with the girls or I go out and indulge a little bit and that helps a lot.

Self-care is important not just for student lives, but for everyone’s. From watching one of your favorite Netflix shows, to taking a bath or going to the gym. Keeping up with self-care is essential to a healthy lifestyle.

Riley Cosman

I am currently in my third year of studies at St. Thomas University. I am majoring in Communications and Public Policy. Since I was a young kid I always appreciated the art of storytelling. I hope to one day work within a communications/public relations business that allows me to use my passion and knowledge to relay a story though a lens.
