Charlotte Street Arts Centre: Emerging Artists

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s Penny Gallery hosts an array of art from up and coming artists. One of the new exhibits is from Alex Cunningham of St. Thomas University.

“This gallery, in particular, is reserved for people who are just kind of getting started in their work,” said Cunningham.

The Penny Gallery has an application that new and emerging artists can fill out. The applications are reviewed by a board and one person is chosen to have their art displayed in the gallery.

For an emerging artist to have their work picked for the professionals it must encourage the development of excellence in the arts. So, all types of art are welcome in the Penny Gallery. Works can range from oils on canvas to chalk on paper.

Once the application is picked, the Arts Centre provides everything that is necessary for a fully functioning exhibit.

They provide the space for the artists worked to be placed and help throughout the process of gathering up the artists work to be displayed.

The Penny Gallery focuses on helping these emerging artists.

“We think it’s important to have a gallery dedicated to emerging artists because people know that it’s there. So, it’s a destination gallery for people when they know they’re going to see something new and different,” said executive director Courtney Stevens.

The Penny Gallery accepts emerging artists of all ages. Since they are so helpful the centre makes it easier for students to have their work displayed.

Stevens also said, “I think it’s important to have the youthful also producing art and showing it to the world because art’s everchanging.”
