Small School, Big Hype
The St. Thomas basketball teams played Mt. Alison Friday, ending in a series split. Despite the loss for the men, Tommies fans were loud and proud, creating an electric atmosphere.
Between the fast-paced action and hyped up fans, a Tommies game can be an exhilarating experience. Sydona Chandon is the social media rep for STU sports and she does whatever she can to capture the Tommie spirit.
“I basically go around and ask each person to like interact while I take pictures. I also focus on the marketing aspect, so I post based on whatever event we’re having,” said Sedona Chandon, the social media specialist for STU sports.
If you can’t come see the games live, it is not a problem. Broadcasting the games online helps Tommies fans everywhere gain the sports craving they need.
Another way Chandon keeps the fans engage the fans is by picking one for fan of the game. Chandon picks the most hyped fan and the winner gets a Graphic sweater and their face on social media.
STU Volleyball player, William Leblanc, was Friday’s fan of the game and it was an earned victory. Running around, screaming, and trash-talking the other team, Leblanc is a passionate basketball fan.
“It just gets me really hyped up you know? It’s a fast-paced game, it’s easy to get into and I just love to watch,” said William Leblanc, STU Volleyball player and winner of fan of the game.
A student population of just 1900 students, it is easy to assume athletics doesn’t have support. Where they lack in numbers, they gain in a loyal fanbase that will always support the Tommies. Leblanc see’s this every time he sets foot on the court.
“Honestly, the fans are amazing. For a small school, we have a really high-quality fan base and you really can’t top that especially being an athlete. Like, being at my own games, you can tell the crowd is really into it and that really boost your playing and stuff like that,” he said.
