Tommies Enter Rebuild Mode
This season has been tough for the St. Thomas Tommies’ men’s basketball team. After a 4-17 record last year where they missed the playoffs, only few players remain on this year’s squad. As previous players have graduated or decided to leave the team, this year features five new players.
“As a new team and a young team, to understand the trust that you can go out and defend a player and know someone is there to back you up. So, if he does break you down, then you have help from behind,” Tommies’ head coach Scott Macleod said. To coach a team so new, you must learn how to trust each other, just like any team he would go on to say.
Though the Tommies have gotten off to a slow start, losing their first seven games but have slowly improved throughout the season. Macleod said the relies on leaders, as they must be the ones to step up.
“Returning players have to be mentors. They have to be team captains. With Arthur and Travis coming back this year and they’re captains of the team, they have to be the leader guys. They have to show their leadership through example. So it’s a very big job.”
St. Thomas has been getting better each game and still have time to turn their season around. With plenty of games on the hardwood left, anything is possible.
