Cannabis on Campus
Cannabis is now legal, but it is forbidden from being smoked on St. Thomas University’s campus. Meanwhile, students are still smoking it.
Before cannabis was legalized St. Thomas University put out a notice warning students not to smoke on school grounds, but edibles are allowed.
However, the smell of cannabis is everywhere while walking through campus. This can be worrisome since it could be affecting the performance of users at school.
Cannabis can be smelt in dorms as well, which not only impacts the user but the other students in their dorms too.
“Personally I don’t use cannabis so it hasn’t affected me directly, but I am aware of other people using it on campus”, says Rachel deMolitor, a St. Thomas University Student who lives in Vanier.
Since 18% of cannabis users are between the ages of 18-39 a university campus would be full of users. St. Thomas has released many notices to inform students on the policies surrounding cannabis use.
According to BD analytics cannabis users actually make more of a yearly income. It makes people happier at work too. This study combats many hurtful serotypes that are placed on cannabis users.
The government has also issued warnings on the packaging of cannabis. It says that 1 in 11 people can become addicted to the drug. Since all of this information is available students can make a rational decision on whether or not to use cannabis.
