Art Battle heats up FROSTival
Armed with brushes, artists battled against one another as the live painting competition, Art Battle, took place on Saturday, January 27.
An estimated two hundred people attended the exhibition as an activity included in the FROSTival event list.
South Korean artist Jinju Kong won the event, taking both the second and fourth round.
The event was managed by Andre Sampson, an organizer who was one of two people who brought the event east from its origins in Toronto.
“I’ve been an organizer before, I’ve organized some music festivals and things like that. I’m not even really an artist myself.” Sampson said.
In total, 18 artists took part in the competition from all over New Brunswick, including a Saint Thomas University Alumni, Book Sadprasid.
“I think it’s so much fun to come and meet other artists, instead of, you know, painting on your kitchen table,” Book said.
Throughout the night, a featured painter works on their own, larger, piece. Lindsey MacKay was featured this night.
Art Battle is a four round painting competition where spectators are able to enjoy the creative process take place before them.
Artists take to the canvas to paint the best piece they can within the twenty rounds. After a round had finished, a ten minute period took place where spectators voted for their favorite piece.
After the voting phase, the paintings are brought down and put on auction, where afterward all paintings were sold save for one.
After the first three rounds, the winners from each round gather with one runner-up to paint for the fourth round.
The winner of the fourth round is declared champion and awarded bragging rights.
FROSTival continued on through February fourth with other festivities held.
