FROSTival’s Final Weekend
Atlantic Canada’s largest winter celebration is coming to an end this weekend.
FROSTival Fredericton has been hosting outdoor and indoor activities throughout the city, with something for every age group. The winter fest offers hundreds of events to choose from.
Getting people out of their warm homes on bitterly cold days can be tough. But Downtown Fredericton has noticeably livened up since FROSTival kicked off January 18th.
The city’s hub is decorated with ice sculptures created by Chef Richard Chiasson. There are white and blue FROSTival signs on every light post you see. If you take a peek inside local bars and restaurants they’re packed with smiling faces enjoying a meal, a drink or both.
Shawna Foster and her husband are the owners of MOCO Downtown, one of the 11 restaurants participating in the FROSTival celebration, Dine around Freddy.
“This is our second year doing it and it brings a lot of people out of their houses and downtown and into the events and out dining. With the menu we’re offering, the three courses, it’s an opportunity to try some of the best food that Fredericton has to offer” Foster says.
Dine around Freddy may be an opportunity to try the finest cuisine in the Capital city but it’s also helping out local organizations like the Fredericton Community Kitchens. A dollar of every plate sold through the special menu goes towards the Student Hunger Program, one of the many initiatives from the Fredericton organization.
The buzz the celebrations have brought to the city has been beneficial for many local businesses. But in the age of social media, the traffic its brought has been huge too. Red Rover employee Navy Vezina is in charge of the businesses’ social media accounts, “We have more posters that come in, we have more people ask questions, more things posted on Facebook so from a social media aspect it’s definitely more fun to post and more cross promotions for Fredericton businesses so that’s been fun.”
Whether you’re strolling downtown or scrolling online keep an eye out for remaining FROSTival activities to enjoy.
