Catholic Students Week at St. Thomas University
St. Thomas University celebrates National Catholic Students week with a nod to the saint that the university is named after.
“Catholic Students week is a week when all across Canada students on campus celebrate their Catholic faith, put on events and generally try to make their presence known on campus” says Vivien Zelazny, the Campus Minister at STU.
Catholic Students week also happens to coincide with the feast of the patron saint of the University, St. Thomas Aquinas.
“We are doing a number of events for Catholic Students Week and their sort of Saint Thomas themed” says Zelazny.
From January twenty-eighth to February fourth, the Campus Ministry at STU is preparing for several events in honour of the occasion.
On Tuesday students in Campus Ministry handed out cookies in James Dunn Hall both to commemorate Thomas Aquinas’s love for food and to say hello to students on campus.
The week also includes a Theology on Tap on Friday. That’s a monthly event where a guest speaker is invited to lead a discussion in various theological topics. This month’s theme revolves around Aquinas’ political thoughts and his ideas around being motivated by the common good.
Also in honor of Saint Thomas Aquinas and his scholarly background, a trivia night will be held on Sunday. It’s called Trivial and Quadrivial Pursuits and refers to the popular board game as well an allusion to the subjects studied in universities in Medieval Europe: the Trivium and Quadrivium, also known as the seven liberal arts.
STU’s campus ministry is not just for catholic students, the interfaith ministry hosts a number of events for all students and members of the community.
Students like Emily Miller say that Campus Ministry plays an important role in creating a community on campus. “If anyone wants to join, they’re more than welcome” says Miller, “We have more events than just mass or just an office, we like to have somewhat of a community”.
From Spanish Mass to movie nights, all are welcome at Campus Ministry.
